Web Krews are an exciting new program created by Space 42 in partnership with the STEM2 HUB in Jacksonville, Florida. The main focus is to promote and equip our youth with the knowledge and skills to solve tough problems, gather and evaluate evidence, and make sense of information. These are the types of skills that students learn by studying science, technology, engineering, and math—subjects collectively known as STEM.
The Web Krewe initiative is designed to expose the students to STEM educational enrichment through this immersive technology challenge. The students will express their knowledge through competition, they will experience being on a team and they will be working on real world issues, not hypothetical situations. The idea is to engage and excite the students about the opportunities available to them via STEM.
Teams will be made up of 8 to 10 students in grades 9 through 12. The students do not need previous training in programming. The only requirement is an interest in technology, including graphic design, coding and the business aspects of information technology. It makes it easier for teams if the students have access to a computer outside of school.
Coaches are the adult sponsors that help the teams with everything from delivery of content to logistics and scheduling. These will usually be teachers from the school, but may also be adults from the organization sponsoring the Web Krewe. It is not imperative for the coach to be technically-oriented, only that they can excite the students about the opportunity afforded to them.
Mentors are critical to the success of the program. Mentors are members of the business community skilled in website and application development who invest in a Web Krewe through their time and their talent. Providing support to their team with real world stories and first-hand examples of why and how the learning translates to actual business situations.
